Here are some of the important chords for the beginner guitarist

Please note that I have included this section only to give you an overview of some of the more important chords that you can expect to find at UpGuitarHill.  There are literally thousands of chords out there (peruse a guitar chord book and see for yourself).  While many chords exist, in fact, there are only a few that are used when it comes to playing the popular songs.

I would strongly suggest that you use the 15 UpGuitarHill lessons as a means to get to know the chords, rather than to try jump in and learn them from here.  I say this because the lessons will introduce you to guitar technique in the form of chords, strums, embellishments, picks etc. in a slow and gradient way and with accompanying exercises that will help you to be able to grow into an ability to play the chords (place them, their variations, how to strum them, pick them, embellishments etc.).  This means that you will learn the chords naturally, rather than trying to learn them from a chord book or from the list below.

The chords listed below are the basic chords that a beginner would need to know.  Using just a few chords you will be able to play a large variety of popular songs.

I have put the chords in an "rough" order of easy to play to more difficult to play.

Note:  A chord name with (imp) at the end of the name means this chord is a more complicated improvement on the basic chord you have already encountered.  I.e. the improved chord now involves a finger straddling the fret board to form a bar or has extra fingers added to improve the sound. etc.
