How to tune your guitar with an electronic guitar tuner.

I am often asked by beginner guitarist's how to tune a guitar.

The electronic guitar tuner is an absolute must have!

It is really easy to use.  If you use the guitar tuner once and see how convenient it is you will use it always.

Check out my video below to get an idea of what is required.

But before you do here is a simple thing to remember that will help you.  You will be tuning each of the 6 guitar strings in an open position I.e. with the string open and without the string being pressed in any way.  If you look at the strings from the top wire bound and thickest (6th) string down to the thinnest nylon (1st) string, these strings are named by the letters: E, A, D, G, B, E

A cool way to learn the letter names of the strings is to learn this short rhyme:

"Every Alsatian Dog's Got Big Ears"

The reason we learn the letter names of the 6 open strings is that they will also be referenced by the same letters in the electronic guitar tuner, so it will now be easy to use the tuner to find the string you are working on and tuning.

If you want more information on the electronic tuner or other ways to tune the nylon string guitar then check out the FAQ.  Electronic tuners come in many different sizes and shapes.  They also can operate in slightly different ways when compared to each other so there is not one single standard to use to classify them all.  But each new electronic guitar tuner will have an instruction pamphlet that shows you exactly how to use it and if used in conjunction with the rhyme above you will have no problem identifying each of the strings and tuning them perfectly.
